The city lies on the Desna River, 130 km northeast of Kyiv and 50 km from the border to Belarus. Chernihiv was first mentioned in 907. It was one of the chief towns of Kievan Rus and the center of a princedom. Its Transfiguration Cathedral dates from 1036 and the oldest church in the country. An old city with much beaty and history.

The city was designated as a Hero City by the Ukrainian government for withstanding an invasion by Russian troops during the first month of war. Much of the surrounding villages were taken by the Russians, but they were stopped outside the city by local forces and civilian bravery.
